Nairobi Kenya, Kenya’s dormant leather industry is set for a major revival as Italian manufacturers and technology providers commit to significant investments, with Equity Group positioning itself as the strategic financial partner in what could become a regional transformation worth billions of dollars.

The partnership, formalized at Equity Centre in Nairobi, represents a calculated move to capture value from Kenya’s massive livestock resources – currently seeing over five million animal skins go to waste annually – and transform the country into a regional leather processing hub.

The numbers paint a compelling investment picture: Kenya’s leather infrastructure currently includes 13 major registered tanneries with combined annual capacity of 31,440 tonnes of hides and 15.6 tonnes of skins, supported by 49 large slaughterhouses, 322 medium facilities, and 1,735 slaughter slabs. This existing capacity represents significant underutilized industrial assets primed for activation.

Equity Group’s Chief Strategy Officer Brent Malahay highlighted leather as a priority subsector within the bank’s Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan (ARRP), positioning the financial institution to leverage Kenya’s “competitive advantage” in becoming a global leather sector hub.

The revival effort has secured high-level government support, with the Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock Development and Ministry of Investment, Trade & Industry providing policy backing. Key infrastructure developments include the Kenanie Leather Industrial Park in Machakos County, designed to facilitate smallholder farmer aggregation and industrial-scale processing.

Principal Secretary for Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke emphasized investor protection through the Foreign Investment Protection Act, Investment Promotion Act, and Investment Dispute Convention Act – regulatory frameworks designed to safeguard foreign capital deployment.

Italian Ambassador Roberto Natali led a delegation of industry specialists from major associations including UNPAC (National Association of Italian Leather Chemicals Manufacturers), UNIC (Italian Tanners’ Association), and ICEC (Institute of Quality Certification for the Italian Leather Sector).

Agostino Apolito, General Director of ASSOMAC – representing Italian manufacturers of footwear, leather goods and tanning machinery – outlined the technology transfer component: “Italy is a global leader in the leather products industry and we want to work with Kenyan and African farmers and other leather industry players to support them through skills and technology transfer and enhanced European market access.”

The partnership builds on existing success stories like Alpharama Tannery in Athi River, which has emerged as a regional leader in hide and skin procurement across East Africa while expanding into global markets through Equity Group financing.

Managing Director Sambasiva Rao Pamidimukkala’s operation demonstrates the scalability potential, having grown from local processing to regional procurement networks with international market penetration.

initiative leverages Equity Group’s established presence across Kenya’s livestock value chain, where the bank currently supports and insures thousands of businesses. The financial institution’s multi-sector investment approach – spanning transport, energy, and manufacturing – provides integrated support for leather industry development.

The partnership follows a cooperation agreement between Equity and Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest) under the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, creating a structured investment facilitation framework.

The leather sector revival represents a significant import substitution opportunity for Kenya while creating export potential for value-added products. The initiative addresses youth employment challenges while activating underutilized livestock resources that currently represent economic waste.

Italian expertise in machinery, chemicals, and processing technology combined with Kenyan raw material advantages and Equity’s financial infrastructure will create a compelling value proposition for scaling operations across East and Central Africa.
