Equity Group Holdings has secured shareholder approval for a groundbreaking move to establish its first representative office in the United Arab Emirates.
This positions the East African banking giant to capitalize on the rapidly growing trade and investment corridor between Africa and the Middle East.
The unanimous approval, granted at the bank’s annual general meeting at Equity Centre in Nairobi, represents a significant milestone in the lender’s regional expansion strategy and underscores its commitment to connecting African markets with global financial centers.
“This is a transformative moment for Equity Bank,” said CEO James Mwangi during the investor briefing. “The UAE represents a gateway not just to the Middle East, but to India, Central Asia, and South Asia – regions where we see tremendous opportunities for our clients.”

The strategic move comes as trade volumes between Africa and the UAE continue to surge, with bilateral trade reaching record levels in recent years. The UAE has emerged as a preferred destination for African businesses seeking to expand their global footprint, while Middle Eastern investors increasingly view East and Central Africa as attractive investment destinations.
Chairman Professor Isaac Macharia emphasized the timing of the expansion, noting that despite challenging global economic conditions, Equity Group has demonstrated remarkable resilience and strategic foresight. “We’re not just expanding geographically; we’re creating a bridge between two of the world’s most dynamic economic regions,” he stated.
The approval coincided with the bank’s announcement of a robust Sh16 billion dividend payout at Sh4.25 per share, reflecting the institution’s strong financial performance and confidence in its growth trajectory. The 34 percent dividend payout ratio aligns with the bank’s policy of returning 30-50 percent of profits to shareholders.
