Liverpool fans in Kenya and across the world are mourning the sudden and devastating loss of Diogo Jota, the beloved Liverpool forward who died in a car accident in Spain at just 28 years old.

Jota, who was known for his tireless energy, crucial goals and passionate displays in the famous red shirt, was travelling with his younger brother Andre Silva when tragedy struck on the A-52 motorway near Zamora.

Both brothers died at the scene after their car veered off the road and caught fire — it’s believed a burst tyre while overtaking caused the accident.

The Portuguese forward was on his way back to England for pre-season training with Liverpool, fresh from a summer where he had just lifted the Premier League title with the Reds — a triumph that so many Kenyan Kopites celebrated proudly.

He was also part of Portugal’s Nations League-winning squad in June and had married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, only two weeks ago. Together, they had three young children.

Since arriving at Anfield from Wolves in 2020, Jota quickly became a fan favourite among Kenyan supporters for his fearless attacking play and knack for scoring big goals in crucial matches.

In just four seasons, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances, helping deliver the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. His passion and work rate perfectly embodied the spirit that Kenyan fans so fiercely identify with.

Liverpool Football Club released a short statement saying:

“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. We request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, team-mates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”

At Anfield, flowers, scarves and heartfelt tributes now cover the famous Shankly Gates. Fans back in Kenya have also begun planning vigils and meet-ups in local supporters’ groups to remember the man who brought them so many magical moments.

Club legend Jamie Carragher summed up the grief felt by the Liverpool family worldwide:

“He was so humble, so loved by everyone. He’d just won the league, just got married — it’s just impossible to believe. It reminds us how precious life is.”

Darwin Núñez, his team-mate and friend, posted:

“There are no words for so much pain. We’ll always remember your smile. Rest well, brother.”

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who played alongside Jota for the national team, shared:

“It doesn’t make sense. I send all my strength to your wife and children. We will all miss you. Rest in peace, champion.”

Jota’s impact was felt far beyond the pitch. He inspired a new generation of Reds in Kenya, where his name and number 20 shirt could often be spotted in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu on match days. He was a symbol of hope — that with hard work, passion and courage, you can rise to the very top.

As the Liverpool community across Kenya comes together to honour Diogo Jota’s memory, his legacy will live on — in the songs sung, the shirts worn proudly and the passion for the club that unites fans from Anfield to Africa.

Rest in peace, Diogo Jota. Once a Red, forever a Red.

YNWA. ❤️
